Created in 2000, STEJ (Sainte Thérèse de l’Enfant Jésus) is a Togolese not for profit non religious association working for the education of children and young people in Togo. We are team of three young Togolese and two English and French partners, supported by a network of Togolese volunteers. Taking a grassroots approach we work in true partnership with the communities that we support, advocating the values and practice of love, respect (both for the environment and each other), solidarity, independence, empowerment, responsibility, sharing, exchange, acceptance, understanding and equality.
The Association was created in Agoè, a suburb of Lomé by a young girl of just 14 years old; a young girl with an innate sense of justice and equality. Realising that she had more opportunities and support than many others in the community, she decided to act. She created an association. In 2000 at her house in Agoè, the young girl welcomed the first 12 vulnerable STEJ children.
Since these early beginnings the Association has much developed. Today it assists a total of 130 children, in three centres; Agoè 75 children; Kévé 26 children and Kouvé 29 children. Activities include; the provision of school materials for the start of the school year; financial support for school fees; extra lessons; twice weekly (Wednesdays and Saturdays) socio-cultural activities; children’s radio programmes at Radio NOSTALGIE Lomé; Saturday School; and the construction of a library/educational centre…
